Add a menu item to a menu type custom field

Hi,

I'm developing a procedure to add menu items to a custom field "Modality" of the standard entity Incident. I try create a generic object with name Incident.CustomFields.c.Modality and I tried a lot of combination to create menu item but without success. I have no problem to populate a custom object menu but I can't add menu items to a custom field. Also I can read menu items of my custom field Modality but I can't write them. Do you think it's possible to add menu items to a custom field of a standard entity?
